Barna group does surveys about church related stuff. Their ones on worldview are worth reviewing. I have yet to figure out how to get a copy of the report and study, but I suppose it will cost more than I’m willing to pay. Still, here is a link to their posting about their worldview surveys:

If you see where they are coming from and what they are asking, you get a better sense of what the information points too. The 9% number seems almost a scare tactic. Still, read for yourself.

Another noteworthy tidbit is that they don’t ask people to self-identify. They define “nominal” Christians and “born again” Christians based on responses to certain questions in the survey. So, one needs to know how they are defining terms and categories before one can assess the assertion that only one in five Christians hold a Christian world view.

Overall, I’m skeptical of their conclusions. I see the studies as valuable, but only as a start. They amount to the first data point, not a scientific study. Perhaps Barna will expand the scope of such studies, and perhaps other groups will devote some time and resources to such matters, providing us a thorough picture.
